Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

Although it seems complex initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming collection of wagering choices and because you have many individuals trying for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
