Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi low starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some players can get confused. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of the game with ease.
